Arts & Roots: Over 80 Neighbors Have Great Conversations!

Conversations, connections, and the neighorhood’s best pot of chili: all ingredients present at the first Mapleton-Fall Creek Unity Forum which was held on Monday, March 10 at Tabernacle Pres. on 34th and Central.

The large dinning room at that centrally located neighborhood church was filled with over 80 neighbors and neighborhood stakholds providing chatter, the freshness of new friendships, and the wonder of what might bubble up from these connections.

The next forum, which is called “Going Green”, will focus on conversations about lowering utility bills through environmentally safe practices, neighborhood beautification, and all things eco…to name a few. Going Green will be held at 6:00pm on Monday, April 14 at Broadway United Methodist Church (29th & Broadway). More details will come and, until then, enjoy these photographs from Arts & Roots!

Mapleton Fall Creek Unity Forums Focus on Conversation, Connections, Community

Three neighborhood-wide forums — each focusing on a distinct facet of life within Mapleton-Fall Creek (MFC) — are planned this Spring for residents of the MFC area. “Meetings are designed to provide a welcoming environment for Mapleton-Fall Creek residents as we find connections with each other based on our gifts, talents, and dreams,” said De’Amon Harges, one of several neighbors involved in the Unity effort.

Held from 6-8pm at local churches or organizations within the MFC area, these forums will provide free locally-catered cuisine. Additionally, complimentary childcare is anticipated. The first forum on March 10 at Tabernacle Church (34^th and Central) focuses on Arts, Roots & History in Mapleton-Fall Creek. This forum will connect neighbors around all forms of artistic interest (visual, performance, cooking, gardening, quilting & sewing, sports & games and words), as well as provide the opportunity to connect around cultural roots and history with the neighborhood. The April 14 forum at Broadway United Methodist Church (609 E. 29^th St.) will focus on Going Green: Surviving to Maximizing our Old Homes. This meeting will allow neighbors to connect around lowering utility cost through environmentally sound practices, caring for place, supporting green sustainability and sharing tips for resources. The final forum on May 12 at the Children’s Museum will focus on a spectrum of Youth issues ranging from Intergenerational activities to education, leadership development and recreation.

These forums are made possible through an IMAGINE grant from the Great Indy Neighborhoods Initiative (GINI) and are being hosted by the Mapleton-Fall Creek Unity Group, which consists of an informal group of Mapleton-Fall Creek neighbors.
